Why do I need alternative accommodation insurance?
When you take out insurance, you’re protecting yourself against the worst things which might happen. This may include accidents or any unexpected events which make it impossible to continue working in your premises or impossible for your tenants to continue to trade. If this happens, you’ll need somewhere else to go. If you have alternative accommodation insurance your needs will be covered. If not, you could be left desperately looking for somewhere else to operate from. That means renting out another premises at considerable expense until your property can be used again.
Won’t this be included in my property owners or business insurance?
Not always. Although some insurance policies will come with this included, not all of them will. You should check when you compare quotes from different insurers to see if finding somewhere else to trade from will be included as part of your cover. If not, you may want to choose a different provider. When you compare quotes with Brisco Business, you will be presented with all the options so you can choose the policy which best meets your needs.
What is defined as uninhabitable conditions?
If your premises is left without basic amenities most of us take for granted, it will be declared uninhabitable. This includes electricity, running water, sanitary conditions and heating. Providing this damage has been caused by an insured peril such as fire or flood, insurers will fund the cost of alternative accommodation until your premises can be used again. When you need to make a claim, you should notify your insurance company. Before alternative accommodation is agreed, the property will have to be inspected by a loss adjuster to assess the extent of the damage.
What type of alternative accommodation might I be offered?
The basis of alternative accommodation cover is that you will be offered like-for-like accommodation that lets you carry your business on as normal. So, say you currently trade from a leased office premises, your insurer would fund the cost of leasing an alternative office for you to trade from while your office is being repaired. You will be expected to lease a like for like property so if your damaged office is 1,000 square feet, insurers will expect you to lease a similar office of a similar size.
