I don’t own the office. Must I pay buildings insurance?
No. This will be the responsibility of your landlord. Likewise, you won’t have to pay for any items which belong to your landlord rather than you. You will need insurance for your own contents and equipment and protection against injury to the public (public liability) or employees (employers liability).
Can I insure contents outside the office?
Yes, but you must make sure it’s explicitly stated in the insurance policy. If not, you may only be covered for damage which occurs inside the office. You may want to consider cover for things such as company mobile phones and laptops whilst away from your office.
What if I work from home? Will it be covered by my home insurance?
No. You home insurance will not cover your office equipment if you use it at home. You will have to include this in your office insurance.
How do I calculate how much cover I need?
You should look at the risks you face, and the value of everything you need to insure. This will include the rebuild cost of your office. This means you’ll know how much insurance you need if the very worst happens.
Are there any exceptions which may not be covered?
Sometimes, yes. An insurance firm may place limits on how much cover it is willing to extend and may consider a claim invalid if you have made certain mistakes. This will all be set out in the terms and conditions of your policy. Read these carefully. When you get a quote from Brisco Business you will be able to compare the options from various different insurers and choose the option that suits you best.
Why should you consider professional indemnity cover as a designer?
Whether you’re a graphic designer or an interior designer, precision is key. You’ll be working to a specification and every last detail must be accurate. Unfortunately, nobody is perfect and mistakes do happen – but errors in your profession can have grave consequences. Having a designers insurance policy including professional indemnity means the costs are covered if clients are unhappy with your services and decide to take legal action. Professional Indemnity insurance is often an optional extension or even a separate insurance policy so make sure you have this option when taking your quotation.
