I don’t own the office. Must I pay buildings insurance?

No. If you rent an office, it will be your landlord’s responsibility to pay for damages to the fabric of the building. You are only responsible for those items which belong to you. Equally, if they have left any items in the office you will not be responsible for their insurance or replacement.  You will need cover for your own contents and equipment and insurance to protect you against injury to the public or any staff you employ.

Can I insure contents outside the office?

Yes you can, but you need to make sure this is explicitly listed in your policy. You’ll need an all risks policy which extends coverage beyond the confines of your office.  This will be useful for business laptops or mobile phones which are taken away from your office premises.

What if I work from home? Will it be covered by my home insurance?

No. Your home insurance won’t extend to your office equipment. This will have to form part of your office insurance. You’ll also have to make sure it is included when it is in your home.

How do I calculate how much cover I need?

Understanding how much insurance to take out can be tricky. If you succumb to the temptation to lower your premiums you may find you don’t have enough cover in place to protect you against all your costs. You should calculate the total value of everything you want to insure, to avoid an unpleasant surprise when the time comes to make a claim.

Are there any exceptions which may not be covered?

Check the details of your policy. Some insurers may limit the amount of cover you can take out. For example, if they have a maximum value you may be responsible for any costs which exceed that. If you have also failed to comply with your obligations such as taking basic safety precautions, it may also invalidate your insurance.  When you take a quote with Brisco Business, you will be presented with options from leading insurers and can compare covers to choose the policy that’s right for you.

What does computer programming insurance cover?

Every policy is tailored to the exact needs of that individual or business, meaning no two computer programming insurance policies are the same. However, most tend to come with public liability insurance (for claims regarding personal injuries or property damage), business equipment insurance (to cover the costs of lost, stolen or damaged equipment), and employer’s liability cover – a legal requirement for any business that employs staff.
